FOLKLORE

Finnish folk dance

Finland has a rich tradition in folk dances.

The influence of this country becomes especially from Russia's culture.

The most popular folk dances are polkka, jenkka, sottiisi, valssi, polska, Menuetti and all the dances from Karelia's region.

FOLK FESTIVALS

Finnish folk festivals are important in order to observe these dances. The most important are:

Finland has a long history of preserving its rich mythology and folklore traditions. In addition to poems, songs, ghost stories, legends, and spells, there are also tales about nature, intended to warn listeners of dangers lurking in forests, pass on knowledge, or simply entertain. Animal tales are one of the most common manifestations of folklore, and they can tell much about the traditions, values, and history of the time and place of their occurrence. The most common stories, characters, and archetypes – like how the bear lost its tail or the sly fox – are still known by many in modern Finland, and some of the attitudes shown in these old folk tales remain even in the society of today.
